WBMS Dance Program Overview:

The West Briar Middle School Dance Program is a dynamic, student-centered program designed to cultivate artistry, leadership, and personal growth through movement. Serving 6th–

8th grade students across multiple levels—including Dance Year 1 (Beginner), Year 2 (Intermediate), Year 3 (Advanced), Dance Ensemble (Company), and Break Dance—the program offers structured, progressive training while creating meaningful opportunities for students to explore their identities, collaborate with peers, and connect art to life.

West Briar Middle School Dance Program

Keisha Thompson-Williams is a dance educator, director, and creative leader with a strong foundation in performance, pedagogy, and production. She currently serves as Dance Director and Department Head at West Briar Middle School, where she leads a culturally responsive program that develops students as artists, collaborators, and confident leaders.

Thompson-Williams’ training spans both New York City and Houston, grounding her work in diverse movement traditions and professional practices. Her experience extends into film and production, where she integrates choreography, visual storytelling, and technical design to expand how students engage with dance beyond the stage.

She holds a Bachelor of Science in Health and Human Performance from University of

Houston, a graduate certification in Social Emotional and Character Development from Rutgers University, and an Urban Education Micro-Credential from Texas Woman’s University. She is currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Dance with a concentration in Education at Texas Woman’s University.

Rooted in culturally responsive pedagogy and social-emotional learning, Thompson-Williams’ work centers student voice, identity, and creative agency—bridging artistry, education, and real-world application through both performance and production.

Where students are not only trained to perform—but empowered to create, lead, and be seen.

Programs & Team Offerings:

•   Dance Ensemble (Company): Audition-based performance group focused on technical excellence, leadership development, and community representation. Members perform in major showcases, competitions, and collaborative events.

•   Dance Levels 1–3: Scaffolded curriculum that builds foundational technique, choreography skills, and performance readiness.

•   Break Dance Program: Expands access to hip-hop foundations and street styles, offering inclusive pathways for diverse student interests.

•   Williams Lab Dance Production Project: A signature initiative that extends dance beyond performance into production roles such as choreography, directing, lighting, sound engineering, filmography, costuming, and marketing.

Student Involvement & Opportunities:

Students engage in a variety of enriching experiences that foster ownership and agency:

•   Seasonal Showcases: Winter and Spring productions highlighting student growth and creativity.

•   “Scene & Seen” Choreographic Film Festival: A culminating event where students direct, produce, and present original dance films.

•   Pep Rallies & Campus Performances: Opportunities to build school culture and showcase talent to a broader audience.

•   Collaborations: Partnerships with high school programs such as Inertia Dance Company and PRIDE Dance Team, as well as participation in initiatives like Performing Arts Houston’s Project Soar and Houston Arts Alliance.  

•   Field Lessons: In association with The Houston Ballet, students learn the fundamentals and techniques of Ballet Dance and attend the annual “Nutcracker Ballet” (Advanced Y3 & Dance Ensemble Only).  

•   Leadership Roles: Class Captains, Managers, Dance officers (Captain, Co-Captain, Technique Officer) and Social officers who support team culture, communication, and event coordination.

Achievements & Distinctions/

•   Distinguished Division I rating as a high achievement fine arts dance program in the Houston Independent School District in the annual Dance Montage and Emerging Choreographer and the Middle School Dance Festival  

•   Participation in Performing Arts Houston’s Project Soar, including featured performances at Jones Hall as part of the HEB Prelude Series.

•   Participation in the Wortham Theatre’s Cullen Hall stage play, “Tootharina Von Twinkle.”  

•   1st-3rd place rankings at the MA Dance Competition in genres ranging from modern, contemporary, jazz, novelty, break dance and more.  

•   Recognition for fostering a positive, inclusive classroom culture rooted in social-emotional learning and culturally responsive pedagogy.

•   Strong feeder pattern connections with local high school dance programs, preparing students for continued success beyond middle school.

•   High student engagement and growth in confidence, collaboration, and creative expression.

Program Structure & Schedule:

•   Classes operate on a 90-minute A/B rotation, allowing for in-depth instruction, creative exploration, and reflective practices.

•   Daily structure includes:

Warm-up & conditioning

Across-the-floor progressions

Center work & technique development

Choreography & creative exploration

Reflection (written and/or movement-based)

Commitment & Expectations:

Dance program students are expected to commit to the following:

•   Dancers are to dress in all black clothing that is appropriate and suitable for dance (leotards, fitted short or long sleeve shirts, tights, sweats etc).  

•   Dancers are not allowed to wear socks but may use ballet shoes, jazz shoes, lyrical sandals and/or dance socks.  

•   Dancers are to have their hair off of their face and pulled back into a ponytail.  

•   Dance is a performing art— Participation is REQUIRED.  

•   Additional needs may be required as performance opportunities arise.
