West Briar Middle School Athletics Program
All West Briar Middle School athletes must complete an Athletic Physical Packet in order to participate in competitive sports. All athletes must have a
registermyathlete.com account and all paperwork must be completed. All athletes must be insured to participate in any athletic activity! HISD offers Student Accident/Athletic Insurance at a reduced cost of $35.00 per athlete, per school year. You must make one of three choices with regard to student insurance:
- You have insurance and waive HISD insurance; complete your insurance information and check “HISD Waiver” box on the Medical Information Form.
You must turn in a copy of your insurance card and fill out a waiver and return it to your coach. - You have insurance and want HISD insurance to act as secondary coverage; pay $35, complete your insurance information and check the
“School Insurance” box; or - You do not have insurance; pay $35 and check the “School Insurance” box.
If you are purchasing HISD insurance, please include cash or money order (payable to West Briar Middle Athletics) with your packet forms.
* If you elect to waive HISD insurance, please ask your head coach for a waiver form. This is required by HISD and must be notarized.
It is strongly recommended that physical education (PE) be scheduled for two semesters each school year, in grades 6 and 7. Students in 8th grade do not have to take PE. To comply with this state PE requirement (four semesters in grades 6-8), West Briar schedules all sixth-grade students into a full year of PE. A student who takes Middle School Dance may meet the PE requirement and/or Fine Arts requirement.
Students should choose one PE credit course (PE, Athletics, or Dance) according to whether they meet the description requirements listed below. (*Note- students will be placed in PE if no selection is made and coaches/teachers have not made the recommendation per tryouts.)
Athletics is the class period for students who are playing a UIL sport and are on a West Briar Athletic team. Students planning to try out or who make the below teams should sign-up for Athletics:
- Girls- Volleyball, Basketball, Soccer
- Boys- Football, Basketball, Baseball

- Academic Support: Monitoring grades to ensure athletes maintain eligibility and prioritize academics.
- Inclusive Participation: Opportunities for all skill levels, often with no-tryout options in community-based leagues.
Off-Season Training Program
West Briar Off-Season Training Program for middle school athletes (grades 6-8) focuses on fundamental movement patterns, bodyweight strength, mobility, and acceleration/deceleration mechanics over heavy lifting, aiming to improve coordination and prevent injury.
- Training 2–3 days per week with 60 - 90 minute sessions is ideal to build a solid athletic base while allowing recovery for growth.
- Training sessions will be offer in the Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer.
